Westminster Summer Attractions
Westminster, the heart of London, becomes a vibrant hub of activity during the summer months. From royal ceremonies to exquisite dining, there are numerous attractions to explore. Here are some of the best places to visit, all just a stone’s throw from our restaurant, The Pem at Conrad London St James.
Trooping the Colour
One of the most spectacular events in Westminster during the summer is Trooping the Colour on Saturday 15th June. This grand military parade marks the official birthday of the British monarch, His Majesty King Charles III. The ceremony, which dates back to the 17th century, features over 1,400 parading soldiers, 200 horses, and 400 musicians. It’s a display of British pageantry at its finest. The event begins at Buckingham Palace (11 mins walk) and proceeds along The Mall to Horse Guards Parade, where the King inspects the troops. The spectacle concludes with a Royal Air Force fly-past. To witness this event, it’s best to arrive early for a good spot along The Mall or opt for ticketed seating in the stands around Horse Guards Parade.
Buckingham Palace Open House
From 11th July to 29th September 2024, Buckingham Palace Open House will open its doors to the public, offering a rare glimpse into the royal residence. The Buckingham Palace Open House allows visitors to explore the 19 State Rooms used for official ceremonies and receptions by the King. Highlights of the tour include the Throne Room, the Music Room, and the Picture Gallery, which houses masterpieces by Rembrandt, Rubens, and Vermeer. The opulent rooms are adorned with some of the greatest treasures from the Royal Collection, including fine porcelain, period furniture, and decorative arts. The tour also extends to the Palace’s Garden, providing a serene escape in the heart of the city.
Local Landmarks
Beyond these highlights, Westminster offers a plethora of other attractions worth visiting in the summer. The iconic Houses of Parliament (11 mins walk) and Big Ben provide striking backdrops for photos and guided tours, while Westminster Abbey, with its rich history and stunning architecture, is a must-visit for history buffs. St. James’s Park, with its picturesque gardens and resident pelicans, offers a tranquil retreat from the bustling city.
For those interested in art and culture, the nearby Tate Britain showcases an impressive collection of British art, from the 16th century to contemporary works. The Churchill War Rooms provide a fascinating glimpse into Britain’s wartime history and Winston Churchill’s life.
